The New Waveland Café
On August 29, 2005, the New Orleans, Louisiana area was hit by a Category 5 hurricane that left large areas flooded and without gas or electricity, and rendered many people homeless. It seemed to several people that the Rainbow Family manner of running a kitchen in a forest in primitive conditions could be especially effective in the similar conditions of an aftermath of a destructive storm. These people eventually wound up in Waveland, Mississippi, 58 miles from downtown New Orleans on the Gulf coast. They teamed up with a Christian relief group from Bastrop Texas, and together they served up to 6,000 meals a day, while serving as a central distribution point for donations from all over the country funneled thru F.E.M.A.. Later a second kitchen was set up inside New Orleans.
I have gathered some posts about this story to alt.gathering rainbow together here into one document, converting them from web pages produced by Google Advanced Groups Search. I have made no changes or corrections to anybody’s posts, with this exception: I have shortened quoted sections, since in some cases people quoted entire posts, including quotes of quotes therein, and to reproduce all of these would make this document way too long.

Hurricane Katrina has been upgraded to a catagory 4 and there is a good chance that it will be a catagory 5 by the time it reaches landfall. folks in LA. AL. & MS. and expecially New Orleans which is beloow sea level are in for a bad one, put your flaming asside and concentrate on sending loving energy to our brothers and sisters there. It is expected that New Orleans will be under 10’ to 15’ of water.

Katrina surprised us in the Florida Keys by turning back south - some of us didn’t even have the shutters up - it messed us up a bit, including taking away our electricity for a few days - but we got away mild compared to what New Orleans could get - our prayers for safety go out to them.

not trying to dampen any altruistic spirit but maybe any folks thinking of running to the Gulf Coast to help ought to check with the Red Cross, fire depts or other such agencies “in the know” before heading out. from what i see on the News bridges are collasped, theres flooding up to rooftops and tons of debris blocking the roads everywhere. bridges on I10 are down on both sides of the hwy so N.O. looks to be totally cut off. just thinking its beautiful that good folks want to help but that they shouldnt risk becoming in need of rescue themselves. be safe!

well new orleans is under martial law right now, it’s a big fucking mess, they’re not letting anyone in to the city right now. anyone wanting to help out with feeding refugees and such ought to think about baton rouge, or any city near these hard-hit regions where a lot of evacuees are staying. i live in baton rouge, we were pretty lucky, considering the shift to the east that the storm took. i was only without power for 13 hours but theres still a couple of thousand people here without power. we didn’t really get much rain, and only maybe 50-55mph gusts. theres sure a hell of a lot of people from new orleans here right now though, and it looks like they may be taking up residence here for a few months. fema’s talking about hooking people up with rent money and shit.

Right on. I was thinking that in response to the question of where to evacuate all the folks to, it could easily be National Forest. Maybe someone should tell them. Then “we” could train the red cross how to maintain large encampments in the woods ...

I was absolutely serious in my other post about Rainbow showing the Red Cross how to do it. Evacuate those folks to the woods. Cooler, calmer, could be set up the way we do gatherings. Folks could help out their own selves with such an operation, once they were shown how, rather than depending on the government and relief agencies for their very survival. The National Guard could truck in food (no Magic Hat, no Supply to hassle with), water filtration could be set up. Is there a workable site anywhere near the flooded areas?
Unfortunately, I don’t think FEMA would go for it. Even though they know exactly what we do and how we do it. They’re too busy figuring out ways to shut us down to allow us to be of real assistance. Also, God/dess forbid anyone should teach people how to help themselves.

sheesh ... what gall! just b/c someOne has the capacity to do a crime doesnt mean that they commit a crime. i may own a gun but that doesnt mean i murdered anyone. maybe you might want to get the info from the supposed victim first before you start spreading rumors, smearing characters and pointing accusing fingers. now that your bias against those you consider to be your enemies is blatantly obvious i’ll likely find whatever “evidense” you present to be highly suspect.
