2004 California Banking Report
The Magic Hat was fat this year. It brought in over 15 thousand dollars, and expenses were lower than usual due to many kitchens supplying themselves, and Acres of Kindness, a farm in California run by Family people, bringing us truckloads of produce and asking the Hat for only gas money. Simply Wonderful kitchen, run by some Krishna devotees (but not members of ISKCON), sent over twenty 5-gallon stainless steel pots of food to Dinner Circle every evening, mostly supplying themselves. ($2000 was given them as partial reimbursement in appreciation for a job well done.) Cleanup was left the largest amount in my memory. Our affluence enabled us to satisfy all applicants with almost no controversy at banking council. I am on the road right now, and posting on public library computers where I can’t send by FTP, which I need to do to add things to my website. So this report is entirely a piece of ASCII art where I have done without tables and tabs. (Sorry, no pie chart this time.) For the columns to line up, you will need to set your reader to a fixed-width font like Courier.

no fs walk thru when i left... but i was told at banking council... that seed was going to be purchased... instead of HIRING a plant biologist ...to teach us how to pick the seeds...
i heard the plant biologoist story from several people...from banking council.. and Markens friends...
saying they didn’t want to spend cleanup funds...earler...cause they might have to hire a plant biologist ....to teach us how to harvest seeds on the site...
This story turned out to be bs as i was told we were buying the seed and not hiring a biologist...
it would have been nice to have rubber gloves, medical supplies, when we cut our hands... garbage bags ....trash pickup gas at main recycling ...and big trucks or trucks with trailers to pick up the trash from 8th-15 ...at welcome home recycling....
the family spent $15 on recycling gloves on the 8th for about at lesat 100 people picking up trash.. all we had were used gloves..or no gloves...
also about the fire... the fire i put out was going for a least a week so the soil underneath it was hot... if you got a hot fire going ...like at the sweats... you need to dump a couple of gallons of water on it to cool it down...smoothering it with dirt...is not enough.. i believe the winds kicked back up the flames... all the camps in the area had been abandoned...

Thanx for doing this each year BB. It’s great that this is out in the open. I try to do the same with Water each year, but I am just not that organized. I do have a banking question.. see the end of my report. FWIW Water donations were also fat this year. We usually get a few hundred from bank and around $500-$1000 from on site donations (a few large donors but mostly shaking the can). I have one person who helps greatly (you know who you are) with research, logistics, ordering and a decent donation each year. I usually put $500=$1000 of my own money in as well.
This year we were so good going into things I didn’t shake the can or ask anything from banking. I will need more next year, but are ahead on several things (about 2 years worth of filters built up etc). I got about $1500 in the paypall account and about $2500 in donations or supplies from collective large donors who donated from $100 to $1000 in supplies and/or $$$$. I also had $400 from a donation from Loving Ovens last August. I have yet to add it all up but I think I have about $500 left over for next year.
The biggest expenses were filters/ the water tank / shipping everything west and helping Val and Amie with water. This year we gave Val and Amie most of our fittings that we use for filters since they didn’t have enough. That wiped us out of a past year stock pile of about $300 worth of fittings and clamps that would have lasted us a few years. I also donated $500 to purchasing pipe. It was in two $250 checks to Marken. I think that was around the 24th or so. So my question is why is that not shown. If I put $500 in the bank around the 24th I should have seen that bubble. Also money was given to Val from Marken (according to Val) for water pipe, but I don’t see that in the outgoing $$$ shown. Why is this missing?
Since I seem to be getting good at raising $$$ for water and the filters are getting stable I have two goals for next year. 1) Expand fund raising to be water (pipe etc) and not just filters 2) Build small kitchen size filters to distribute to reputable kitchens.
All in all we had a great time and produced lots of good clean water. A very special hats off to Amie for all the hard work he did this year in making sure everyone was plumed and taking the initiative to properly clamp and pressurize the line this year and to move past the white pipe. The system worked so much better this year with so much less Maintenance because of him.
I’ll get some pictures up soon I hope.

well
$16 was spent on gloves on 7/9 for hundreds of people doing cleanup.. when i got down to main recycling around the 9th all we had at main recycling was used gloves and bags...till after the 13th when NEW gloves and bags were dropped off... from the top...
just as i thought there are 2 sets of books...
http://www.mydr2.com/cgi-bin/english/rainbow_book_2004.pl
i copied down the book when i went up to banking council on the 13th to try to beg some money for lower bus village cleanup... we had nothing down there...
as you can see from the book nothing was spent down below from 7 to the 13th...as i was told they were saving money for 1)plan biologist...2)fine for camp xxxx for killing trees 3) firemen for portapotties...4) Marken’s new rig.. 5) the High Holy Party...
the big truck was not running till around the 15 or so... the owner was sick... so a trailer could have rented for a few days....with some the $9k
once the big truck was running the large recylcing pile was gone in 2 days...

You mean three sets. The FS bills and other embezzlement don’t appear one the second one either.
A basic rule of accounting is the idea of balancing the books. These don’t balance, signalling corruption, like last year. Ban the magic hat!

Here we have two sets of “books” and neither balances to zero, and the second one seems to show over $6,000 unaccounted for. Foote, an eyewittness, claims at least some of that was earmarked for FS bills. I’m glad it’s a private event which means 1) I don’t have to worry about it and 2) it’s none of my business anyway. It’s the business of the “Rainbow Family,” and they, loyal followers that they are, don’t seem to ask questions. I guess that’s called the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy. Good thing for the RMT and the USFS.
This $6K is dwarfed the goverment “cost,” approaching $1 million, but it has a deeper, symbolic significance. It shows that a private organization exists which can handle money privately, even if it’s a fraction of the budget. It makes agreements, pays bills, speaks and takes responsibility for other people. Nobody even questions it anymore.
Why bother? As BB posted the other day, the high holies have decreed that the permit “is the only choice for all of us.”

First of all, I think all the people who worked on the water system deserve a big round of applause. The water system at this summer’s gathering worked much better than the system at last summer’s Utah gathering. Flawlessly, pretty much. Couple of questions:
Did the PVC tubing from Chicago ever manifest? Last summer, at the Utah gathering, I overheard someone talking about several reels of black PVC tubing that could be had for the taking in, I think, the Chicago area. The story was that some business was closing down a warehouse and wanted to get rid of the tubing. They were willing to give the tubing away if someone would come pick it up. So, was that the tubing that was used this summer?
Would the simple filter and barrel system at Instant Soup be an example of “small kitchen size filters to distribute to reputable kitchens”?

Thanx.
We owe most of that to Amie. He is on his second year of doing water. Last year he basically helped Val. This year he decided he knew a better way and broke ranks somewhat with Val doing things much differently than the way Val did. Incidentally the way he did things was pretty much the way Sunbear and Tools taught me in 1991 so I feel we lost 13 years of knowledge that we just got back. Anyway bottom line is his way was more work upfront and for cleanup, but much easier to keep things working so less work during the gathering.

I don’t know anything about Chicago pipe. I may be off on these numbers.. brain getting fuzzy so... First off we had been using about 3/4 white PVC and 1/4 black pipe. This year we finally convinced folks that the white PVC is too much work and went all black pipe.
We started with about 1 to 1.5 miles of black 3/4” black pipe that Val bought new. Someone brought 3/4 mile of 3/4” from Val’s place.. question where did the rest of last years pipe go? There should have been 3-4 miles left from last year. Amie bought a shipment of about 1.75 miles of black pipe. This was mostly 3/4 but some 1/2 and, I think, a small amount of 1” (for spring head).
Val bought a small amount more pipe.. I think about .5miles not sure. The more I think about it he may have bought pipe twice. Good Water bought pipe twice. I forget amounts.. I think it was about 1 mile total. Many kitchens brought 500 - 1500 feet of pipe and this filled in the blanks. Major kitchen contributors (1000’ or more) included Crucial and Jerusalem.
Pipe is about $0.10 a foot BTY plus you need fittings and clamps at about $1.50 per 300 feet. So I’m coming up with about $5k was needed for pipe this year and another $3k or so for filters.
> Would the simple filter and barrel system at Instant Soup be an example of “small kitchen size filters to distribute to reputable kitchens”?
That would work. My issue with that one is it is a bit pricey and is slightly smaller, and is not cleanable. Still it’s a good system and easy to build. Hats off to them for the only other system in camp that has passed health department water sample tests.
I designed one for KV (it was there this year but I don’t think they used it) last year that uses a single Katadyn element and 1 pre-filter. It’s slightly larger than Instant Soups one and costs about $150-$200 to produce.
Turtle Soup also invented a good one, but it is possible to breach or contaminate it if your not careful (as Deva did last year) so I don’t like it for general use. IT also is not cleanable, but it is much easier to build.
Musical Veggie invented on but I don’t think the filtering in it is good enough (it failed water sample tests last year when Bread Of Life tried to use it).

Are those the ones that accept the permit and the gathering management? After all, somebody has to decide who’s “reputable,” and only a central management authority can do it.
It’s funny how this kind of thing is just accepted now at face value. When it was a rainbow gathering it seemed like evidence that not all people are sheep. Now they act like Amerikans.

He’s got a point Marty. I don’t blame those who aren’t in it for the bucks or ego tripping. Tribes that come self sufficient and are willing to risk all under the ‘group liability clause’ aren’t scamming or representing anyone un bidden, against their will, or any thing of the sort. Yeah, “Soup” was under the Permit at the event, but there is nothing to make me believe they had ought to do with foisting anything on anyone.

Would it be a good idea to periodically post equipment needs on agr? That way when sisters and brothers come across kick-downs and throw-aways, or just good deals, they can get in touch. Sometimes things do happen. For example, a building contractor buys one too many reels of black tubing, and maybe its too much trouble to return the reel to the supplier. So the guy might be willing to sell the reel for half price if someone is willing to pick up. Lots of stuff goes down like that. Certainly, if I hear about something I’ll post it here.

Marty you have lost it.
How can you turn this into a permit issue. Someone is asking me if the filter at Instant Soup is the kind I had in mind building and giving to assorted kitchens. Only you can twist words and bring down every topic into a permit debate even if it’s not there. Marty there is no conspiracy.. I’m in charge.. I decide... no comity. I build them I decide who I think I should give them to (with a bunch of input from others). Get out of this thread Marty. It’s not a permit issue. I agree and I do that from time to time. I also have a web site (which tends to be a bit stale) that lists thing water needs and keeps folks updated.
http://www.ashevillecommunity.org/hawker/water/
I think the problem is there are so many things we could use, how do you list them all. If your gathering experienced you probably have a good idea of needs. Or you might know the needs that you might recognize if you ran across them. For example I don’t think most folks would know a GMRS Repeater for CALM if it hit them in the face, or know that we could use one, but those who would be likely to see one would know that we need it.
What I have found, as far as water goes. Is a few people read what I write and even fewer bring things. I get 1 or two folks who bring things they find and 2 or 3 folks who purchase things I need (o.k. one main big downer - than you know who you are) who gets me a pile of the stuff I need for water. I think many kitchens or Rainbow projects eventually get anonymous beneficiaries. I have 3 or 4 people who regularly give me $250 plus but it doesn’t pay all the bills so I need to solicit more funds each year - same as most I think.
As for accusations of no carry over $$$. I think those folks are paranoid. Your just not seeing the end of the books, or folks space things.. no conspiracy. Some years I have extra, other years I’m in the hole. It all balances out.

why would calm need a repeater for? there is more than enough radios as it is! now batteries would be nice. and i guess a repeater somewhere far enough away from calm to get the backside of a gathering, but not right in calm. and with the layout of some gatherings it would take alot of repeaters just to relay messages around the site.
one thing though you do a great job along with the others on the water, and you will always get support for that for sure. and i hope you never get to old to each those kids out there how to do the job with the same dedication as you have! i for one could say spend what money you get anyway you think is right! even though you don’t need any permision from anyone! spiritrising

most of the time there is just barely enough $$$ to do cleanup....
so forget about carrying over to next year.... every penny is usually spent... on necessary expenses...
my complaint is hardly any $$$$ got sent down to main recycling between July 7th and 13th when it was needed most and the hat was fat...$9k here...and we were using our escape money to pay for recycling...
and trucks were leaving cause they couldn’t afford to use their escape $ to do cleanup...
meanwhile.... banking council... was debating about what to save the cleanup $$$$ for...instead of spending it ....like on renting a big trailer to haul out trash...for 7 days...

Were you with a reputable cleanup crew? Just asking so don’t jump on my shit, okay? I wasn’t there and I don’t know how they work these Rainbow-like or style Gatherings (as Principle would say).

Hi stubby. My first sentence ended in a question mark showing the rhetorical and speculative nature of what I was saying. Learn to read better and come back and play some more. :^)

Back when I could safely come I brought a hundred times more food than I would eat and hauled off a thousand times more trash than I generated when I left. “Cleanup begins on arrival.” shouldn’t be just a slogan. If 5% of gatherers did what I do cleanup would amount to disappearing kitchens, fire pits, a few trails, running a disk harrow over the trampled ground to loosen compaction, and reseeding.

The bureaucrats on the hill had to count it a bunch of times to make sure of something, way it sounds.

they won’t have nearly as many people around to divvy the $9k up with. Do the math. Your thinking on this subject, to me, seems clouded by the presumption that the RMT has some integrity.
My advice: Stop thinking of “Rainbow” as anything other than the whole of hue-manity. Stop following and trusting in leaders like Plunker, Karin, Carla, me, Billy Graham, the Pope etc. and keep your own temple swept and Karma clean.
I am not a group.

The craigslists.org around the country would be really fat for this. There are free lists that present about everything you could name over time including plastic pipe. m the r

Note:
Rob wrote some info on this at http://www.welcomehome.org/rainbow/tech/radios/ CALM already uses a main central repeater. It is required to get reliable radio access to the full site and to meet up with ambulances on the fringes. A good repeater gives us 75 mile coverage or so. I took the “repeater” example out of air.. but I guess the issue is that a backup repeater would be good (the old back up blew up) and the main repeater is getting so busy that many CALM people don’t want to be on it. Many want there own frequency. They are using CH3 FRS now but it doesn’t have good enough coverage for them and they often can’t get out during emergencies due to limited radio range. We are using GMRS Repeater CH 1 for general repeater. It would be nice if CALM had, say #2 and Parking (which needs the repeater due to the distance) had there own as well. This way people who are trying to work and not hear chatter are available when needed, but not removed from being present by chatter ont the radio they don’t need.
Thanx for the water complement. My big focus is to make sure folks understand that I am but one person of many doing water. This year I would say most of the hard work was done by others, especially Amie and Val, yet I often get credit for there work since they are less visible than I. Let’s give them the credit they deserve. There are many players in water - the whole “You don’t want any” camp, Ron and Crucial Kitchen, Carie and Jay, Doug Lamar, Tom, Val, Amie, and many others that need credit as well.

Somebody wants my formula! I feel so needed. Good, here it is for the third time. I really should patent this. It’s great stuff! If this keeps up I could post this weekly as part of a a.g.r. FAQ. Here it is:
Title: HOW TO DISTINGUISH NEGATIVE FROM POSITIVE A.G.R. POSTINGSStep one: Use valid criteria
pro-permit = positive
anti-permit = negative.
Step two: Assure a statistically valid level of accuracy
agree with the poster = positive
disagree with the poster = negative
Step three: Resolve all borderline cases
poster is a positive person = positive
poster is a negative person = negative
With some experience following these guidelines, you can become an expert at selecting between positive and negative postings on a.g.r. As I pointed out before, when I select between positive and negative posts my accuracy rate is in excess of 99%. That’s a result of years of practice.
When you get that good nobody can question the validity of your judgements on the negativity of posts, and you will no longer inadvertently post any negative postings yourself. In fact you will have achieved perfection and will be beyond all reproach, like me. Good luck!

Hey Hawker,
Don’t forget Bedrock who spent much time trying to hook BARF up with water (and many others); and not to toot my own horn too much but BARF and INSTANT FAITH :) did an amazing job of keeping people out of the meadow where the water was flowing. I bet the water was clean the whole time.

Hey Jay,
We came up pretty good on $$$ this year. Not short at all. I am sure we will need more next year. If it’s going to be mid Atlantic most of the pipe will not make it cross country so we will need big $$$ to get pipe on the east coast. Email me about February when we are starting the water council on-line and I’ll keep you posted. I’m sure I’ll do another paypall account next year as well. the old one is still open, but might as well wait till next year, the $$$ is just going to sit there till then anyway.

Fine. How do I get to my unpermitted space without passing though permitted space, and violating my rights in the process?
Is the airspace over permitted ground also under the permit? If not, I could try to airdrop myself somehow. Tricky, but it *could* work!

Before answering Hawker I will say an aside to all who read this group. As I have already mentioned, I am now on the road and having to do all my internetting on public library computers, and all my usenetting with Google Groups . Both the Muskogee and Tahlequah (Okla.) libraries let you have one hour of time per session, two sessions max per day. In Muskogee you have to get there in the morning, because after noon usually all of the 15 or so computers will be taken, so for all practical purposes for me it’s one hour a day. (There ain’t much wi-fi in this neck of the woods.) I am in a relationship with two other newsgroups, not to mention a set of Live Journal friends, so I have to do a lot in little time. If I come in and see 20 or 30 replies to a post of mine, I will save the thread pages to floppy and take them back to the motel for perusal on my laptop at leisure. (It’s a used Dell with a keyboard with bouncy keys tthat reepeatt strokes and drives mee nuts. Guys, don’t buy Dell!) So if I have responded to other guys without answering you, this will usually be the reason why. (The other reason may be that you bitch about everything I post and I have learned not to waste my time, but that’s only for a few guys on this group.)
To answer Hawker: if you gave Marken checks, he would have had to leave the site to cash them, and due to the large amount (a gas and grocery will think 250 is large), he may have even had to go back to his own bank in Eugene to do it. Neither Marken nor I will enter into the books income that can’t be paid out again on site to supply runners and such. Marken didn’t tell me about the checks, but knowing Marken, if he didn’t cash them before the end of the gathering he will hang on to the money and bring it next year. And that will be entered as income for 2005. He did that this year with a $50 check from Utah. Marken is so nitpickingly honest that sometimes it can be a pain in the ass, and I can guarantee that the money will eventually be spent for the Family.

I’m sure I’ll do another paypall account next year as well. the old one is still open, but might as well wait till next year, the $$$ is just going to sit there till then anyway.
But it will acrue interest more than any bank account I know of. Did anyone have problems donating that way as far as you know? -woodstock-

You might need a permit to get to the unpermitted area, but maybe the permit signer or someone could carry ya to your spot. You bet it’s tricky- the unpermitted part might have to be private land! -woodstock-

The interest bearing account is different than what i have, so it will just sit there.
As for donations. There are some people who didn’t use it who gave big donations, and of course, there are many who don’t use computers much. On the other hand many people commented on how easy the Paypall thing went. It sure made my life easy and the donation level was much higher than normal. The big issue is Paypall gets a big hunk. I think Paypall gets $0.50 + 3.5% so if you donate, say $5 paypall gets a big chunk of it. If you donate say $100 it isn’t as big a deal because the additional $$$ is a small total percentage, but for the small donors paypall gets a large chunk.

Oh, well I believe all you need to do to upgrade to a premiere account is deposit at least $250 and once it clears you can take it out. The little perks make the fees balance out or definitely minimize it, especially if you go for the debit card since you also get little kickbacks for using as a credit- that coupled with the interest for keeping money in the account makes it worth it. -woodstock-

Google Advanced Group Search can be accessed by first calling up a group name in Google Groups (alt.gathering.rainbow is at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/alt.gathering.rainbow) and then clicking on the little black arrowhead inside the search window at the top of the page – at the extreme right, just to the left of the blue magnifying glass search button).
Not all posts can be found in Google’s archive; posters had the option of putting “X-No-Archive” in their headers, and some other posts are apparently completely lost for other reasons. Using their search engine is also hit and miss; I sometimes had to try several combinations of words to find some posts. The originals of all of these posts can most easily be found by enclosing the thread name in quotation marks in the Subject: box.
